United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned an Israeli airstrike that killed six Palestinian journalists in Gaza City on Sunday and urged an independent, impartial investigation into the incident, UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said on Monday. The strike hit a tent set up for reporters outside Al-Shifa Hospital, killing Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif, fellow journalist Mohammed Qreiqeh, cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa and Mohammed Noufal, as well as freelance reporter Mohammed al-Khaldi. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights described the attack as a “grave breach of international humanitarian law,” while the European Union, the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders also issued condemnations. Israel’s military acknowledged targeting al-Sharif, whom it accused of Hamas affiliation, but critics said the accusation lacked credible evidence. Dujarric noted that at least 242 Palestinian journalists have been killed in Gaza since the war began in October 2023, underscoring what he called the “extreme risks” faced by media workers. The UN chief reiterated that journalists must be respected and protected under international law and allowed to work without intimidation or harm.
