The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights said at least 1,760 Palestinians have been killed while trying to obtain humanitarian assistance in Gaza between 27 May and 13 August. Of those fatalities, 994 occurred near sites run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and 766 along convoy routes. The agency attributed most of the deaths to Israeli forces and urged Israel to halt attacks on civilians and aid escorts. Conditions for aid collection remain perilous. Medical sources reported 47 additional deaths and 226 injuries from Israeli fire across the territory in the 24 hours to 17 August. Local officials said as many as 38 of those killed were waiting for food, underscoring the continuing risk faced by people seeking relief. The enclave’s hunger crisis is deepening. Gaza’s Health Ministry put malnutrition-related fatalities at 251, including 110 children, after recording 11 such deaths in the latest daily count. UNRWA warned that unsafe access routes and scant supplies are accelerating the spread of famine and disease. Overall, Gaza’s Health Ministry says Israel’s military campaign has killed 61,944 people and wounded 155,886 since 7 October 2023. Aid agencies have renewed calls for unfettered access to the strip, restoration of basic services and protection for civilians gathering at relief sites.
