Israel’s security cabinet has approved a plan for the military to “take control” of Gaza City, expanding the nearly two-year war in the enclave. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the objective is to defeat Hamas and secure the release of captives, but the move diverges from advice given by senior Israeli commanders who have questioned troops’ readiness after prolonged combat. Hamas condemned the decision as a “war crime” and warned that deepening the offensive would amount to “sacrificing” the remaining hostages it holds—estimated by the group at 49, with many feared dead. Families of captives inside Israel echoed concerns that the assault could further imperil their relatives. International criticism was swift. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the plan represents a “dangerous escalation” that risks worsening an already catastrophic humanitarian situation. Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, called for the operation to be halted immediately, citing the potential for mass displacement and civilian casualties. The UN Security Council will hold an emergency session on Saturday to discuss the crisis. A joint statement from the foreign ministers of the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Australia and New Zealand rejected Israel’s decision, warning it could breach international humanitarian law and intensify the risk of famine in Gaza. Germany separately suspended weapons deliveries that might be used in the operation. The United Arab Emirates, France, Chile and other governments also issued condemnations, urging Israel to reconsider and to ease access for humanitarian aid.
