U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington is increasingly hopeful that a ceasefire and hostage‐release agreement for Gaza can be reached in the near future. Speaking on the sidelines of an ASEAN summit in Malaysia on Thursday, Rubio indicated that recent diplomatic contacts have narrowed remaining gaps between Israel and Hamas. Rubio added that U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff plans to launch a new round of indirect, or “proximity,” talks with the parties soon. He described Witkoff as “optimistic” that the forthcoming discussions could lock in a framework to halt fighting and secure the release of captives held in the enclave.
