The Washington Nationals defeated the San Francisco Giants 4–2 at Oracle Park on Saturday, powered by three early solo home runs off rookie left-hander Carson Whisenhunt. James Wood opened the game by driving Whisenhunt’s third pitch over the wall, and Paul DeJong and Josh Bell went back-to-back in the third inning, all on sinkers, to give Washington a lead it never relinquished. Nationals rookie Brad Lord, whose previous major-league victories had come in relief, scattered four hits and one run over six innings for his first career win as a starter. Whisenhunt lasted four innings, allowing five hits, three walks and the three long balls while striking out five. Rafael Devers provided San Francisco’s main offense with his 22nd homer of the season—and seventh since joining the Giants—while Wilmer Flores delivered a pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the eighth. The Giants left seven runners on base and fell to 59-58, two games back of the final National League wild-card spot.
