The Los Angeles Dodgers transferred rookie right-hander Roki Sasaki to the 60-day injured list on 20 June after he continued to experience discomfort from a right-shoulder impingement. The move cleared a 40-man roster spot for left-hander Zach Penrod, acquired in a cash deal with the Boston Red Sox. Sasaki, 23, had gone 1-1 with a 4.72 ERA across eight major-league starts before being shut down on 13 May. Manager Dave Roberts said the IL transfer was largely procedural and confirmed that Sasaki resumed a light throwing program on 21 June, working out from 60-to-90 feet without pain. Roberts hopes the Japanese phenom, who re-started baseball activities after receiving an anti-inflammatory injection, could rejoin the rotation in August if his build-up progresses without setbacks. Amid continuing strain on the pitching staff, the club made additional moves on 29 June, designating veteran reliever Luis Garcia for assignment, recalling right-hander Noah Davis and reinstating right-hander Edgardo Henriquez from the 60-day IL before optioning him to Triple-A Oklahoma City. The transactions leave Los Angeles with flexibility to cover innings while it waits for Sasaki and several other injured starters to return.
