Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani said he remains committed to returning as both a pitcher and hitter after his recovery from elbow surgery, speaking during a 17-minute press conference on the eve of Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park in Atlanta. The 31-year-old, selected to the midsummer classic for a fifth consecutive year, will start for the National League as the leadoff designated hitter. Ohtani, who underwent a second elbow procedure last September, noted that age and multiple surgeries have shifted his focus toward “gratitude” for simply being able to play, yet he insisted his goal is to resume two-way duties when medically cleared. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised the Japanese star’s clubhouse presence, recounting that Ohtani even fetches water for teammates. Asked about life off the field, Ohtani said his greatest happiness is “seeing my daughter’s face” after games and added that he plans to walk Monday’s red-carpet event with his wife. The three-time All-Star MVP candidate also welcomed conversations with fellow players during All-Star festivities and expressed interest in future rule changes that could entice him back into the Home Run Derby.
