Major League Baseball used Tuesday night’s All-Star Game to showcase its experimental Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System on national television. During an early-inning at-bat, Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal challenged a called ball against San Diego Padres third-baseman Manny Machado. The brief review—aired live with Skubal wearing a microphone—confirmed catcher Cal Raleigh’s request, overturned the call and recorded a strikeout. Fox Sports complemented the demonstration with a real-time umpire body-camera feed, giving viewers a bird’s-eye look at the plate while the ruling was rendered. The sequence marked one of the highest-profile tests to date of the ABS system, which allows pitchers, batters and catchers a limited number of appeals to an automated strike-zone during a game. MLB has been piloting the technology in select minor-league parks since 2022 as it evaluates potential league-wide adoption aimed at speeding play and reducing disputes over strike-zone accuracy.
