Major League Baseball will deploy its Automated Balls and Strikes challenge system during the All-Star Game at Truist Park in Atlanta on 15 July, marking the first time the technology is used in a major-league event. The move follows trials in the minor leagues and throughout spring training earlier this year. Under the rules, human umpires will make the initial call, but each club will receive two challenges that can be triggered only by the pitcher, catcher or batter and must be signalled immediately by tapping the cap or helmet. If the challenge is upheld, the team keeps it. Hawk-Eye cameras determine pitch location, and an animated replay is shown on the scoreboard before the plate umpire confirms or overturns the call. During spring training, 617 of 1,182 challenges (52.2%) resulted in reversals. League officials view the midsummer showcase as another step toward broader adoption. A fan survey conducted during spring training found 72 percent deemed ABS a positive addition and 69 percent supported regular-season use. MLB’s competition committee will meet later this summer to decide whether to recommend introducing the system as early as the 2026 season.
