Shohei Ohtani marked his 31st birthday by working two scoreless innings for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Houston Astros on Saturday in Los Angeles. Serving as an opener in his fourth mound start of the season, the three-time MVP struck out Christian Walker, Victor Caratini and Yanier Diaz in order in the second inning. He allowed one hit, threw 31 pitches—21 for strikes—and left with the game scoreless. Houston broke through for four runs in the third against reliever Justin Wrobleski and went on to defeat the Dodgers 6–4. Batting leadoff, Ohtani went 1-for-4 with a walk and singled to start the ninth before Astros closer Josh Hader retired the next three hitters to seal the victory. Ohtani, who is easing back from elbow surgery, has conceded one run in six innings this season, good for a 1.50 ERA. Manager Dave Roberts said the right-hander’s command "continues to get better" and praised his efficiency. The Dodger Stadium organist played "Happy Birthday" as Ohtani exited the mound, capping a celebratory but ultimately losing night for Los Angeles.
