Eflin leaves start with back tightness, Orioles lose 11-3 https://t.co/cjhPzeHI1x #orioles
Baltimore Orioles right-hander Zach Eflin left Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays after just 28 pitches with what the club described as lower back tightness. The 30-year-old surrendered four runs on five hits in the first inning, including a 467-foot, two-run homer by Jonathan Aranda, before signaling for the training staff. Eflin’s abbreviated outing continued a rough stretch in which he has yielded 17 runs and 27 hits over his last nine innings, pushing his season ERA to 5.95. He missed a month earlier this year with a right lat strain, and the latest setback further clouds his status ahead of next month’s trade deadline. Reliever Scott Blewett replaced Eflin but the damage mounted as Yandy Díaz added a three-run homer to cap an eight-run surge by the fourth inning. Tampa Bay starter Zack Littell limited Baltimore to one run over seven frames, and the Rays cruised to an 11-3 victory at Camden Yards, dropping the Orioles to 35-47 on the season.
