Pittsburgh Pirates slugger Oneil Cruz electrified the 2025 MLB Home Run Derby at Atlanta’s Truist Park by launching a 513-foot drive measured at 118 mph off the bat, the longest shot recorded on the night. Cruz’s appearance followed his July 8 announcement on Instagram that he would enter the eight-player competition, becoming the first Pirate to do so since Josh Bell in 2019. The 26-year-old left-handed hitter entered the break leading Pittsburgh with 15 home runs and is on pace for the franchise’s first 30-30 season since Barry Bonds. This year’s Derby field also features Seattle’s Cal Raleigh, Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr., Washington’s James Wood and Minnesota’s Byron Buxton, with three slots still open. New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso declined an invitation, ending his annual run at the event.
