Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh capped a breakout first half by winning Major League Baseball’s Home Run Derby at Atlanta’s Truist Park on Monday, outslugging Tampa Bay Rays rookie Junior Caminero 18–15 in the two-minute championship round. The 27-year-old became both the first catcher and the first switch-hitter to claim the event’s crown in its 41-year history and collected the $1 million winner’s purse. Raleigh’s path was almost cut short early. He and Oakland Athletics slugger Brent Rooker each hit 17 homers in the opening round, forcing application of the longest-drive tiebreaker. Raleigh advanced when Statcast measured his farthest blast at 470.62 feet—just 0.08 feet longer than Rooker’s. The razor-thin margin, disclosed only after the round, drew criticism from Rooker and prompted questions about MLB’s use of decimal-point distances that were not shown on the in-park scoreboard. Once through, Raleigh defeated Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Oneil Cruz 19–13 in the semifinal before dispatching Caminero. Cruz supplied the night’s most jaw-dropping moment, launching a 513-foot homer at 118 mph—eclipsing Truist Park’s previous record of 495 feet and ranking as the longest Derby shot ever outside Denver’s Coors Field. Raleigh belted 54 homers overall, including 31 of at least 425 feet, with a top exit velocity of 112 mph. He took his swings from both sides of the plate while his father, Todd, pitched and his 15-year-old brother caught, underscoring a family-tinged performance that added to a season in which Raleigh already leads the majors with 38 regular-season home runs and will start Tuesday’s All-Star Game for the American League. Under MLB’s Derby payout structure, Caminero earned $500,000 as runner-up, while Cruz collected a separate $100,000 for the longest home run of the night. The contest featured eight competitors, among them hometown favorite Matt Olson and New York Yankees outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., but it was Raleigh—nicknamed “Big Dumper”—who left Atlanta with the chain, the trophy and a place in the record book.
