Heavy rain sweeping through the mid-Atlantic on Tuesday, July 1, forced Major League Baseball to postpone three games in Philadelphia, Washington and New York, marking one of the most extensive single-day weather disruptions of the season. The Philadelphia Phillies’ series opener against the San Diego Padres was rescheduled as a split double-header on Wednesday, July 2, with first pitches at 1:05 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. In the nation’s capital, the Washington Nationals will play their makeup at 1:05 p.m., while their regularly scheduled contest is set for 6:45 p.m. At Citi Field, the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers will stage a day-night twin bill at 1:10 p.m. and 7:10 p.m. Storm systems continued to disrupt schedules the following week. Thunderstorms in Baltimore delayed the July 8 Mets–Orioles opener twice, ultimately moving first pitch to 7:20 p.m., while rain also halted the New York Yankees’ home game against the Seattle Mariners shortly after its scheduled start. The league has not announced broader scheduling changes, but clubs expect the compressed slates to test pitching depth as they enter the season’s second half.
