Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said Wednesday he is awarding the state’s Governor’s Medal of Freedom to five distinguished Floridians: former Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Graham, former Governor Buddy MacKay Jr., former U.S. Representative Lincoln Diaz-Balart, former Florida House Speaker and Florida State University president John Thrasher, and the late musician-entrepreneur Jimmy Buffett. DeSantis’ office said the honorees “exemplify what it means to be a great Floridian.” The medal, created in 2020 and first bestowed on coach Bobby Bowden in 2021, recognizes extraordinary public service and cultural impact. Graham was cited for leadership in education, environmental conservation and national security; MacKay for advancing regional trade and human-rights initiatives; Díaz-Balart for authoring Cuba-freedom legislation; Thrasher, who died on 30 May at 81, for guiding FSU’s $1 billion fundraising campaign and elevating the university’s national standing; and Buffett for building the “Margaritaville” brand while championing ocean conservation.
