Paul McCartney and Elton John will make on-screen cameos in “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,” writer-director Rob Reiner said in an interview published this week. The two music legends appear during the fictional heavy-metal band’s swan-song concert, adding star power to the sequel of the 1984 cult mockumentary. Reiner reunites with original cast members Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer for the follow-up, which Bleecker Street plans to release in U.S. theaters on Sept. 12, 2025. The story again follows Spinal Tap as it regroups for one last show, with Reiner returning as documentary filmmaker Marty Di Bergi. Asked why veteran performers still relish the stage, Reiner said he put the question to McCartney, who delivers a punch-line in the film: “Yeah. And the drugs.” Reiner added that the cameos underscore a central message of the sequel—if artists still enjoy their craft, age should not stop them. The original “This Is Spinal Tap” has grown from a modest 1984 release into a comedy landmark, influencing generations of mockumentaries and spawning the phrase “goes to 11.” Reiner acknowledged the high bar set by the first film but said early footage of the largely improvised sequel “works” and should satisfy long-time fans.
