HBO released the official trailer for “Billy Joel: And So It Goes,” a two-part documentary that charts the pianist-songwriter’s six-decade career from his Long Island childhood to global stardom. Directed and produced by Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, the film runs about five hours in total and blends new interviews with Joel, rare concert footage, home movies and photographs. Part One will debut on HBO and stream on HBO Max on July 18 at 8 p.m. Eastern, with Part Two following a week later on July 25 at the same time. The project features commentary from Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Pink and other contemporaries, as well as family members and former collaborators who discuss the personal struggles and professional milestones that shaped hits such as “Piano Man,” “Uptown Girl” and “Just the Way You Are.” Produced under Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone banner, the documentary premiered its first installment at the Tribeca Festival last month. Joel, 76, did not attend after disclosing a diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus that led him to cancel upcoming concerts; the filmmakers said his prognosis is positive. HBO’s release returns the network to a subject it first spotlighted in a 1982 concert special, offering its most expansive on-screen portrait of the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer to date.
