Texas officials say at least 82 people have been confirmed dead and dozens remain missing after torrential Fourth of July-weekend rains triggered flash floods across the Hill Country, swelling the Guadalupe River and sweeping away homes, vehicles and a summer camp. Search-and-rescue teams, helicopters and volunteers are still combing Kerr and surrounding counties amid forecasts of additional rainfall. Financial support is mounting. The NBA, its players’ association and the state’s three franchises—the Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs—announced a joint donation of more than $2 million for immediate and long-term relief. They join a growing roster of Texas sports organizations: the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans committed $500,000 each alongside a matching grant from the NFL Foundation, while the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers each pledged $1 million. Corporate aid is also flowing in. James Avery Artisan Jewelry, headquartered in Kerrville, promised $1 million and said all sales of a special charm through Aug. 4 will go to recovery efforts. Walmart, Sam’s Club and the Walmart Foundation offered up to $500,000 in grants and matching funds, as well as in-kind supplies, and the Home Depot Foundation contributed $250,000 while deploying volunteer teams. Restaurants across Dallas-Fort Worth and other Texas cities are dedicating full or partial sales to the Kerr County Flood Relief Fund. High-profile Texans, led by Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey, have urged the public to “lend a helping hand,” calling residents of the state “some of the most resilient and generous people on the planet.” Singer Shakira, who performed in San Antonio over the weekend, said she would donate a portion of concert proceeds to Catholic Charities of San Antonio. Relief organizers are directing contributions to the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country and other local nonprofits as the region confronts one of its deadliest natural disasters in decades.
