A broad line of severe summer storms swept across Colorado’s Front Range and Eastern Plains over the weekend, prompting the National Weather Service’s Boulder office to issue a series of rapid-fire warnings. A tornado warning was in effect for Yuma County until 6:15 p.m. MDT on Saturday, 9 August, and by early Sunday the agency had placed 18 counties—including Denver, Boulder, Adams and El Paso—under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch through 8:00 p.m. Throughout Sunday afternoon, forecasters upgraded several cells to Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, covering locations from Denver International Airport and Watkins to Fort Morgan, Brush and Last Chance. One particularly destructive storm near Hoyt was expected to drop baseball-size hail, while other warnings cited damaging wind and frequent lightning. Travelers at Denver International Airport were cautioned about possible disruptions as storms moved through the vicinity. Separate special-weather statements signaled active monsoon conditions farther south and west. The National Weather Service offices in Phoenix and Flagstaff flagged strong storms for parts of Gila, Riverside and Coconino counties, including stretches of Arizona’s Highway 87 and California’s Interstate 10 corridor. Forecasters advised residents across the region to monitor updates as the unsettled pattern continues.
