A line of severe thunderstorms swept across Chicago and its suburbs from late Saturday into early Sunday, knocking out power to more than 60,000 Commonwealth Edison customers, flooding roads and basements, and prompting multiple flood warnings. Up to five inches of rain fell in parts of Cook County, and the National Weather Service maintained advisories for dangerous swimming conditions along southern Lake Michigan through Monday. Wind damage was most dramatic in northwest suburban Mount Prospect, where a suspected microburst ripped the roof from a four-story apartment building near Route 83 and Dempster Street, affecting about 60 units and displacing residents. Fire officials evacuated the 300-resident complex; no injuries were reported. Farther northwest, the Cary Fire Protection District answered nearly 100 storm-related calls for downed lines and debris, again without injuries. The storms disrupted regional infrastructure, delaying traffic and canceling 264 flights at O’Hare International Airport. ComEd said it expected to restore most service by late Sunday night, with some outages potentially lingering into Monday afternoon. Additional showers and thunderstorms are possible through Tuesday, the Weather Service said, before a cooler, drier air mass arrives mid-week. Authorities urged residents to report remaining flood damage and to exercise caution near flooded areas and along beaches while elevated waves persist.
