Tropical Storm Fernand Forms in Atlantic, Passes East of Bermuda; No Threat to US as Juliette Forms in Pacific
Tropical Storm Fernand formed in the Atlantic Ocean on August 23, 2025, becoming the sixth named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, according to the US National Hurricane Center. The storm developed far from land, southeast of Bermuda, and has been moving northeast over open waters. Forecasts indicate Fernand will continue on a north-northeast trajectory, passing well east of Bermuda without posing a threat to Florida or the United States. The storm briefly strengthened and could have reached Category 1 hurricane status east of Bermuda but remained over open ocean with no coastal watches or warnings issued. Concurrently, Tropical Storm Juliette formed in the Pacific Ocean, located hundreds of miles west-southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur. As of late August, Fernand has been weakening and is expected to dissipate soon, leaving the Atlantic basin temporarily clear of tropical storms. Meteorological models also suggest a potential tropical-like system may develop near southern New England in early September, possibly becoming a tropical depression or storm off the Virginia coast before transitioning into a strong gale.
