Heavy weekend rains across Central Texas have filled several reservoirs, leading the Lower Colorado River Authority to open two floodgates at Buchanan Dam on Monday afternoon—the first such release since May 2019. Lake Buchanan stood at roughly 1,018 feet above mean sea level, or about 97% of its 1,020-foot capacity, after rising 16 feet since July 3. LCRA said as many as two additional gates may be opened later in the day to manage inflows from the San Saba and Colorado rivers. Water released from Buchanan will pass through Inks Lake, Lake LBJ and Lake Marble Falls before entering Lake Travis, which is 76% full and has room to absorb the added volume. One gate at Wirtz Dam and multiple gates at Starcke Dam are already open to ease system-wide pressure. Officials warned residents to steer clear of the Highland Lakes because of swift currents, debris and elevated bacteria. Separately, Texas Water Development Board data showed Lake Nasworthy in San Angelo surpassing 90% capacity after the storms.
