Seattle has recently honored two of its basketball legends with bronze statues outside Climate Pledge Arena. On June 28, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell declared the day "Lenny Wilkens Day" to commemorate the unveiling of a statue dedicated to Lenny Wilkens, a former Seattle SuperSonics player and coach who became a prominent figure in the community. This statue marks the first to be installed outside the arena. Following this, the Seattle Storm announced that a statue of Sue Bird, a four-time WNBA champion and Storm legend, will be unveiled on August 17. Bird will be the first WNBA player to receive a statue from her former franchise, making the Storm the first WNBA team to dedicate a statue to a former player. The statues will stand next to each other, celebrating the contributions of both athletes to Seattle's basketball history. Governor Bob Ferguson attended the unveiling of Wilkens' statue and highlighted Wilkens' impact beyond basketball, recalling his own experience attending Wilkens' basketball camp in 1979.
