The University of Minnesota said it has agreed to a one-year contract extension with head football coach P.J. Fleck, keeping him in Minneapolis through the 2030 season. The new deal follows increased interest in Fleck from other programs and is subject to approval by the school’s Board of Regents at its 9 July meeting. Financial terms were not fully disclosed, but Fleck earned about $6 million last season, including a $700,000 retention bonus, and would be owed roughly 70 percent of his remaining compensation—about $30 million—if the university terminates the contract without cause after the 2025 campaign. The extension leaves Fleck as the 11th-highest-paid coach in the expanded 18-team Big Ten. Fleck, 44, is 58-39 in eight seasons with the Golden Gophers, including a 6-0 record in bowl games and an 8-5 finish in 2024 that culminated with a victory over Virginia Tech in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. Minnesota also reclaimed Paul Bunyan’s Axe with a road win against Wisconsin and logged ranked victories over USC and Illinois last season.
