The New York Jets continued a rapid offseason spending spree by finalising a four-year, $120.4 million extension with All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner, according to multiple league insiders. The agreement, which contains about $60 million in guarantees, pays the 24-year-old an average of $30.1 million a season—eclipsing Houston’s Derek Stingley Jr. to make Gardner the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history. The deal keeps the 2022 Defensive Rookie of the Year under contract through 2030. Gardner’s contract was completed less than 24 hours after the Jets rewarded wide receiver Garrett Wilson with a four-year, $130 million extension that includes $90 million guaranteed. Wilson’s $32.5 million average salary ranks fifth among receivers and is the first to exceed $31 million per year for a player with only three NFL seasons. Like Gardner, the 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year is now tied to the franchise for six more seasons. By locking up two home-grown stars in consecutive days, first-year general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn signalled a more proactive approach to retaining talent than previous Jets regimes. The twin extensions secure the cornerstones of both the offense and defense as the club attempts to snap the league’s longest active playoff drought, which stretches back to the 2010 season.
