Katie Schumacher-Cawley, head coach of Penn State’s women’s volleyball program, received the 2025 Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at ESPN’s ESPYS ceremony on 17 July. The honour recognises Schumacher-Cawley’s leadership in guiding the Nittany Lions to their eighth NCAA national championship while she was undergoing treatment for breast cancer. The title run also made her the first Division I female head volleyball coach to capture a national crown. Named after the late basketball coach Jim Valvano, the Jimmy V Award is presented annually to a sports figure who exemplifies strength and determination in the face of adversity. Schumacher-Cawley’s selection underscores both her competitive success and her public stance on cancer awareness.
