University of Texas defensive back Michael Taaffe used his appearance at Southeastern Conference Media Days on Tuesday to commemorate the victims of this month’s deadly Texas floods. Taaffe wore a navy tie embroidered with the initials of each of the 27 campers and counselors who died when flash floods swept through Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp on the Guadalupe River in Hunt, Texas. The floods struck earlier in July after intense rainfall pushed the river far beyond its banks, trapping staff and children at the remote campsite. State officials have opened investigations into emergency-alert procedures and river-management protocols, while local communities continue recovery efforts. Taaffe, a junior from Austin, said the gesture was meant to keep the victims’ memories visible as the college-football season approaches. The Longhorns are entering their first SEC campaign this autumn.
