The Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan temporarily shut down on Wednesday morning after three New Jersey Transit buses collided on an inbound ramp, injuring 12 people and paralysing peak-hour traffic at the Lincoln Tunnel. The crash occurred around 6:15 a.m. on the terminal’s fourth-level entrance at West 40th Street and Ninth Avenue, according to FDNY Deputy Chief Jason Saffon. Eleven victims sustained minor injuries and one suffered moderate injuries that required extrication by firefighters. Initial accounts had put the number of injured as high as 14 while emergency crews worked to reach the scene through the congestion. NJ Transit rerouted buses to Secaucus Junction, Newark Penn Station and Hoboken Terminal, with rail and PATH services cross-honouring bus tickets. The affected ramp reopened in the early afternoon, but residual delays continued as Port Authority police investigated the cause of the collision.
