Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers recorded his first professional touchdown pass in Saturday’s preseason game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. The seventh-round pick from Texas connected with undrafted rookie wide receiver Theo Wease on a 15-yard strike over the middle early in the third quarter, moments after replacing backup Zach Wilson to open the second half. Ewers’ scoring throw marked a turnaround from his uneven debut the previous week, when he completed just 5 of 18 attempts and lost two fumbles. His performance against Detroit strengthens his bid for the No. 3 quarterback role behind Tua Tagovailoa and Wilson as Miami evaluates its depth chart ahead of the regular season. Miami’s offense had reached the end zone earlier in the evening when wideout Dee Eskridge, competing for a roster spot, hauled in an 11-yard touchdown from Wilson and finished the first half with three receptions for 53 yards. Most of the Dolphins’ frontline starters, including receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, were rested for the exhibition, which was ongoing at the time of publication.
