The Athletic has released its 2025 Quarterback Tiers, an annual survey that canvasses 50 general managers, executives, head coaches and coordinators to rank 34 veteran NFL quarterbacks from Tier 1 to Tier 5. Patrick Mahomes retained his status as the lone unanimous Tier 1 selection for a fifth consecutive year, with one voter calling him “the best quarterback to ever live.” The most significant movement came from Lamar Jackson, who doubled his 2024 support to collect 46 Tier 1 votes and secure a spot in the top tier alongside Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen and, for the first time, Matthew Stafford. Burrow achieved unanimous Tier 1 backing for the first time, while Stafford’s elevation gives the 37-year-old his debut appearance in the elite group. Further down the list, Brock Purdy fell two places to 14th, reflecting mixed views on the San Francisco quarterback’s ceiling after an injury-marred season. In total, seven quarterbacks changed tiers and 14 altered their overall ranking year-on-year, underscoring shifting perceptions as the 2025 season approaches.
