Microsoft and the National Football League announced a multiyear extension of their decade-long technology alliance, adding generative-AI tools to the league’s sidelines and front offices. The deal, whose financial terms were not disclosed, will deploy Microsoft Copilot and Azure AI across game-day operations, player scouting and business functions. Central to the upgrade is the Sideline Viewing System, which will be equipped with more than 2,500 custom-built Surface Copilot tablets—enough for every player and coach on all 32 teams. The devices and new software filters allow staff to retrieve snap counts, formations and other key moments within seconds, replacing manual data searches during the 40-second play clock. NFL Chief Information Officer Gary Brantley said Microsoft’s AI offers “tremendous opportunities to elevate the game-day experience for our clubs and deliver an even more compelling product to our fans.” Deputy CIO Aaron Amendolia added that the technology accelerates access to information rather than making decisions, freeing coaches to focus on strategy. Beyond the field, the partners are piloting Copilot for draft analysis, salary-cap management and fan-engagement apps. At this year’s NFL Combine, Azure AI evaluated data on more than 300 prospects, a model Microsoft plans to expand to regular scouting and video analysis. The announcement reinforces Microsoft’s position as the league’s exclusive sideline technology provider since 2014.
