Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago ordered the closure of Badeggi Radio 90.1 FM in Minna, citing concerns over the station's reporting on worsening insecurity. This directive sparked widespread condemnation from various organizations including Amnesty International, the Nigerian Guild of Editors, the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), all of which criticized the move as an attack on press freedom and democracy. The Information Minister clarified that only the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has the authority to revoke a radio station's license, implying that Governor Bago's actions were unauthorized. The ADC also warned against the governor's approach, stating that Nigeria is not under military dictatorship. Following mounting pressure, the Niger State government backtracked on sealing the radio station, and a court issued an order preventing Governor Bago from taking further action against the station pending further determination. Separately, Governor Bago attributed rising cattle rustling in Niger State to peace deals with bandits by some northern governors. In related developments, former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore was detained and interrogated by Nigerian police over alleged incitement. His detention has drawn criticism from Amnesty International, the African Action Congress (AAC), and civil society activists who accuse the police and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun of abuse of power and harassment. Sowore's lawyer alleged that the detention was based on petitions from a controversial office linked to the IGP and his alleged mistress. Sowore was reportedly injured during detention and secretly transferred to an undisclosed location. Calls for the IGP's dismissal and protests against Sowore's detention have been mobilized. Additionally, retired Nigerian police officers have rejected President Bola Tinubu's healthcare incentives, demanding exit from a contentious pension scheme. The ADC also criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for focusing on early preparations for Tinubu's 2027 re-election campaign.
