Yele Sowore, a Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate, has been detained by the Nigerian Police under controversial circumstances. Sowore appeared at the Nigerian Police Headquarters with a travel bag and personal items, prepared for arrest. Police reportedly threatened to handcuff him for refusing to write a statement without access to a petition, which his legal team alleges originated from the office of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun and an alleged mistress. During interrogation, Sowore was reportedly manhandled and assaulted by multiple police officers, resulting in a broken hand. He was secretly transferred to an undisclosed location and held in an overcrowded cell with other suspects. The police have been accused of abusing power, conducting sham trials, and suppressing dissent, with various civil society groups, human rights organizations including Amnesty International, and political figures demanding Sowore's immediate and unconditional release. The TIB Movement, the African Action Congress (AAC), the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), and other activist groups have mobilized protests nationwide, issuing ultimatums for his release. Legal representatives and rights groups have condemned the police for acting as accuser, detainer, and investigator in Sowore's case, describing the detention as politically motivated. Meanwhile, the police staged a media visit to show Sowore was well treated, which ended in controversy as Sowore demanded the removal of IGP Egbetokun. The situation has sparked widespread condemnation, calls for investigations into police conduct, and demands for the dismissal of IGP Egbetokun. Additionally, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is investigating an unrelated airport security breach involving Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, also known as K1 De Ultimate, who has been blacklisted for six months by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) following the incident.
