Amnesty International and various rights groups have called for investigations into alleged police abuses in Nigeria, particularly focusing on the unlawful detention of activist Omoyele Sowore. Sowore was detained for two days, during which he reportedly suffered a broken hand due to a police cell assault. His legal team condemned police statements and demanded the release of his confiscated AI Ray-Ban glasses. Sowore and supporters have also protested the withholding of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate of corps member Rita 'Raye' Uguamaye, who criticized President Tinubu's government. The Nigerian Police have filed fresh charges against Sowore, including inciting mutiny by leading a police protest demanding improved welfare and pensions, with arraignment set for August 14. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Police inaugurated a committee to review officers’ conditions of service three weeks after Sowore-led protests. In a separate incident, a female passenger, Comfort Emmanson, assaulted an Ibom Air flight attendant and clashed with Lagos airport security at Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Ibom Air banned Emmanson for life, but following public backlash and intervention by Nigerian Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, criminal charges against her were withdrawn, and her lifetime ban was reduced to one month. The Nigerian Bar Association condemned the initial ban and demanded an apology. Emmanson was reportedly subjected to humiliation during the incident, including being stripped naked by security personnel, prompting calls for an independent investigation. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has requested eyewitness accounts from passengers aboard the flight. Additionally, the Bauchi police detained 48 students following unrest at a polytechnic, drawing condemnation from civic groups demanding their release. Human rights organizations have also criticized the appointment of Fuji star Wasiu Ayinde (KWAM 1) as an aviation ambassador amid controversy over his involvement in the Ibom Air incident. The broader context includes ongoing protests and demands for judicial and police reforms in Nigeria.
