Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate Yele Sowore was detained by the Nigerian Police under the authority of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun. Sowore appeared at the Nigerian Police Headquarters with a travel bag and soap, prepared for arrest. His detention was based on petitions allegedly originating from a questionable office linked to IGP Egbetokun and his alleged mistress. During interrogation, Sowore was reportedly manhandled and assaulted by eight police officers, resulting in a broken hand. He was secretly transferred to an undisclosed location and held in an overcrowded cell with over 30 other detainees, including suspects of serious crimes. Sowore's legal team and various civil society groups accused the police and IGP Egbetokun of abusing power, conducting sham trials, and using the police force for personal vendettas. Numerous organizations, including Amnesty International, the Nigerian Labour Congress, the Afenifere Youth Council, and the Yoruba Union, condemned the detention and assault, demanding Sowore's immediate release and calling for investigations into police misconduct. Protests and nationwide demonstrations were organized to demand his release, with some groups threatening to occupy police commands and Nigerian embassies globally. Sowore was released after two days in police custody. The incident sparked calls for the dismissal of IGP Egbetokun amid allegations of ethnic bias, discrimination, and abuse of office. Separately, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) withheld the certificate of corps member Rita Uguamaye, who criticized President Tinubu, citing biometric issues as the official reason. Opposition figure Atiku Abubakar condemned the withholding of the certificate and called for Sowore's release. The controversy has intensified scrutiny of Nigeria's police leadership and governance.
