Nigerian activist Omoyele Sowore was detained by police for two days in an overcrowded cell with over 30 other suspects, including alleged kidnappers and herdsmen. His detention sparked widespread condemnation from political figures such as Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, civil society groups, rights organizations including Amnesty International and SERAP, and youth and student bodies like the Ohanaeze Youth Council and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). Protesters demanded his immediate release, with some demonstrations met by police tear gas and phone seizures. Sowore’s legal team disputed police claims about his condition during detention and demanded the return of his confiscated AI Ray-Ban glasses, which were later returned. Following his release, Sowore vowed to continue protests, including over the withholding of a discharge certificate for a female National Youth Service Corps member, Rita 'Raye' Uguamaye. Meanwhile, Nigerian police filed fresh charges against Sowore, including inciting mutiny by leading a police protest, with arraignment scheduled for August 14. Separately, an incident involving a female passenger on an Ibom Air flight who assaulted a flight attendant at Lagos airport led to her being stripped naked by security personnel and banned for life by the airline. The Nigerian Bar Association and other civic groups condemned the airline's lifetime ban and called for an apology and investigation into the treatment of the passenger. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has called for eyewitness accounts from passengers on the flight. Additionally, police detained a Bauchi youth leader, Usman Sabo, for criticizing a local government chairman, prompting calls for his release. The Nigerian Police have also inaugurated a committee to review officers' conditions of service following protests led by Sowore.
