U.S. sprint star Sha'Carri Richardson has publicly apologized to fellow sprinter Christian Coleman and said she is “holding herself accountable” after her July 27 arrest on a fourth-degree domestic-violence assault charge at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. Police footage reviewed by investigators showed Richardson repeatedly shoving Coleman, grabbing his backpack and appearing to throw an object during a dispute at a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint, according to a police report. Richardson was booked into the SCORE South Correctional Entity for roughly 18 hours before being released. Coleman declined to press charges, calling the episode a “sucky situation all around.” In a video and written statement posted on Instagram late Aug. 12, the reigning world 100-meter champion said she had engaged in “self-reflection,” would seek professional help and wanted her apology to be “louder” than her actions. “To Christian I love you and I am so sorry,” she wrote, adding that she refuses “to run away but face everything head-on.” The incident came days before the U.S. championships in Eugene, Oregon, where Richardson ran an 11.07-second heat in the 100 meters but withdrew from the 200-meter event after news of her arrest surfaced. As defending world champion, she retains an automatic berth for next month’s world championships in Tokyo.
