"Chiefs WR Rashee Rice has been sentenced to five years probation and 30 days of jail time that can be served during those five years." Can someone in the legal community explain those 30 days? Does he just get to pick a time that's convenient for him?

A Dallas County judge on Thursday sentenced Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice to five years of probation and 30 days in county jail, to be served at any point during the probation, after he pleaded guilty to felony racing on a highway and felony accident causing serious bodily injury. The plea deal includes deferred adjudication, meaning the criminal case will be dismissed if Rice meets all probation terms. The charges stem from a March 30, 2024 crash on U.S. Highway 75 in Dallas, where prosecutors said Rice, driving a rented Lamborghini at about 119 mph, and another driver in a Corvette were racing when Rice lost control, triggering a six-vehicle pile-up that injured multiple people. Video showed occupants of both sports cars fleeing the scene. Rice has already paid restitution and a separate Dallas court recently ordered him to pay nearly $1.1 million to one crash victim in a civil lawsuit; additional civil claims remain outstanding. The plea agreement resolves six related criminal cases. With the criminal matter concluded, the NFL is expected to move forward with its disciplinary review. League sources indicated Rice faces a multi-game suspension that would be served during the 2025 season, although he may continue practicing with the Chiefs until the ban begins.
