A Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government MI-17 helicopter transporting relief supplies to the flood-hit Salarzai area of Bajaur district crashed on Friday after losing radio contact while flying over Mohmand District, provincial officials said. Initial statements from the KP administration and local media put the death toll at three crew members, but Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur later said five people, including both pilots, were killed. Bad weather was cited as the primary factor in the loss of communication and subsequent crash. A second government helicopter has been deployed to continue relief operations, and rescue teams have reached the wreckage site. The air accident occurred amid severe monsoon rains that have triggered flash floods across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority reported at least 43 flood-related deaths and 14 injuries in the past 24 hours, with dozens of houses damaged in Swat, Buner, Bajaur and other districts. Authorities have declared an emergency, opened government buildings as shelters and warned that heavy rainfall could persist intermittently until 21 August.
