Rescue teams in Uttarakhand stepped up air-evacuation efforts on 9 August after a cloudburst triggered severe flooding and landslides in the Dharali-Harsil stretch of Uttarkashi district. Helicopters operated by the Indian Air Force and the state’s civil-aviation agency ferried survivors to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police camp at Matli, where temporary medical facilities have been set up. The state government said 52 people had been airlifted to safety by 8 a.m., with additional sorties planned as weather conditions improved. Director General of Police Deepam Seth told reporters that clearer skies allowed both the evacuation of stranded residents and the delivery of food, rations and other essential supplies to cut-off villages. Authorities have not yet released casualty figures, but evacuees described extensive property damage and disrupted holiday travel during the Raksha Bandhan festival. Relief materials are being stockpiled at Matli for further distribution as ground teams work to reopen blocked roads and restore communications across the Himalayan district.
