Pakistan’s federal and Punjab provincial authorities on Monday issued a flood alert as heavy monsoon rains forecast for 7–9 July are expected to swell the Chenab, Jhelum and Ravi rivers and trigger hill torrents in Dera Ghazi Khan. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered the National Disaster Management Authority, provincial administrations and rescue agencies to maintain a high state of readiness, coordinate closely and disseminate real-time warnings. The premier also cautioned that the opening of Tarbela Dam’s spillways could intensify inundation in downstream districts along the Indus. Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif directed Rescue 1122, district governments and police to inspect vulnerable riverbanks immediately and position staff and equipment in sensitive areas. The PDMA Punjab has instructed local authorities to monitor water levels continuously and prepare evacuation plans should conditions deteriorate.
