Pakistani security forces repelled an overnight assault on the Fateh Khel police checkpost in Bannu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday, officials said. Deputy Inspector-General Bannu Nisar Khan stated that roughly 70 militants armed with heavy weapons opened fire on the outpost in a coordinated attempt to overrun it. Police returned fire, killing three assailants and injuring several others, according to preliminary casualty reports. One officer was fatally wounded. Authorities said the attackers also planted two improvised explosive devices on the route used by reinforcements; bomb-disposal personnel defused one device while the other exploded without causing additional casualties. Security has been tightened across the district as investigators trace the group behind the raid.
