Archaeologists in Peru have unveiled the ancient city of Peñico, dating back approximately 3,500 years to between 1800 and 1500 BCE. Located in the northern Barranca province, about 200 kilometers from Lima and 600 meters above sea level, Peñico is believed to have been a major pre-Columbian trade hub connecting the cultures of the Pacific coast, the Andes mountains, and the Amazon basin. The discovery, the result of eight years of research and conservation, reveals an advanced civilization with temples, sculptures, and ceremonial objects. Peñico is considered to have flourished contemporaneously with early civilizations in the Middle East and Asia, serving as a center for social integration and cultural exchange in ancient South America. The archaeological site has recently been opened to the public, highlighting its significance as a newly revealed jewel of Peru's cultural heritage.
