Archaeologists in Peru have uncovered two notable archaeological discoveries in 2025. In June, utility workers installing natural gas pipelines in the Puente Piedra district on the outskirts of Lima discovered a pre-Inca mummy estimated to be around 1,000 to 1,100 years old. The mummy, believed to be a woman from the pre-Inca Chancay culture, was found just half a meter below the surface, leading to a temporary halt in pipeline work as experts expanded the excavation and carefully retrieved the remains. The gas company Cálidda, which has operated in Lima since 2004, reported over 2,200 accidental archaeological finds during its operations. Subsequently, in early July, Peruvian archaeologists unveiled the ancient city of Peñico, located in the northern Barranca province about 200 kilometers from Lima. Dating back approximately 3,500 to 3,800 years (circa 1800 to 1500 BCE), Peñico is believed to have been a significant pre-Columbian trade hub connecting the Pacific coastal cultures with those in the Andes mountains and the Amazon basin. The site includes temples, sculptures, and ceremonial objects, and is considered a center of social integration that flourished contemporaneously with early civilizations in the Middle East and Asia. After eight years of research and restoration, Peñico was opened to tourism in mid-July 2025, marking it as a new archaeological jewel in Peru's cultural heritage.
