Peru’s health-care regulator SuSalud has fined the private provider Auna nearly US$190,000, or about 668,750 soles, for the unauthorised disclosure of medical records belonging to Colombian singer Shakira. The sanction, equivalent to 125 tax units, was imposed on Auna’s Lima-based Clínica Delgado-Auna after the regulator concluded a five-month investigation. Shakira, 48, was admitted to the clinic in mid-February while in the capital for her “Las mujeres ya no lloran” world tour. She cancelled one of two scheduled concerts after being treated for an abdominal condition. Shortly after her admission, extracts of her clinical file appeared on social media, prompting public backlash and the regulator’s probe. SuSalud classified the breach as a “grave” violation of Peru’s data-protection and health-privacy laws. Current rules allow fines of up to 1.6 million soles, but the agency stopped short of ordering the facility’s closure. Auna has said it identified and sanctioned staff involved in what it described as a serious ethical lapse. The regulator added that it would continue auditing health providers to ensure compliance with patient-confidentiality standards.
