Peru’s Constitutional Court on 19 August ordered an immediate suspension of all criminal investigations being conducted by the Prosecutor’s Office into President Dina Boluarte, effectively restoring full presidential immunity for the remainder of her term. The decision freezes probes tied to the deaths of more than 50 people during the 2022 post-Castillo protests, alleged illicit enrichment and the so-called ‘Rolexgate’ luxury-watch affair. The court said each case may resume only after Boluarte leaves office on 28 July 2026. In a precedent-setting ruling, the court limited future inquiries into sitting presidents to offenses listed in Article 117 of the Constitution—such as treason or illegally dissolving Congress—arguing that ongoing investigations disrupt executive functions. Boluarte, who took power in December 2022, has denied wrongdoing in all matters.
