The Philippine House of Representatives has formally requested the Supreme Court to reconsider its ruling that declared the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte unconstitutional, effectively halting her trial. The impeachment complaint centers on an alleged threat by Duterte to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Despite the House's insistence that there was no violation of the constitutional one-year bar on impeachment, the Supreme Court maintained its decision to stop the trial and asked Duterte and involved lawyers to comment on motions for reconsideration. A group led by former Supreme Court justices Antonio Carpio and Conchita Carpio Morales also urged the Court to preserve the status quo in the impeachment proceedings. On August 6, the Philippine Senate voted 19-5 to archive the articles of impeachment against Sara Duterte, citing the Supreme Court's ruling. This move effectively ends the impeachment process, a decision described by Senate Minority Leader Tito Sotto as equivalent to "killing" the case. Some senators called for the Senate to uphold its mandate to try impeachment cases, while others supported the motion to archive. Senator Rodante Marcoleta, a Duterte ally, filed motions to dismiss and later to archive the impeachment case, referencing the Supreme Court's decision. The Senate vote followed debates on whether to proceed with the trial or await the outcome of the Supreme Court's reconsideration. The impeachment complaint was based on findings from a House panel investigation, which did not clear Duterte but built the case against her. The Supreme Court reiterated that its decision to halt the trial is immediately executory. The development marks a halt to the impeachment process against Vice President Sara Duterte amid ongoing legal and political contention.
