Actor Scarlett Johansson has renewed her criticism of artificial-intelligence technology, warning in a new interview with The Sunday Times that it “threatens reality” by eroding public trust in what is genuine. The 40-year-old said she does not believe the “soulfulness” of human performance can be replicated by machines and urged lawmakers to adopt legislation that protects individuals from deepfakes and other manipulations. Johansson’s comments follow last year’s dispute with OpenAI, which in May 2024 pulled the ChatGPT voice assistant known as ‘Sky’ after her lawyers objected that the system sounded strikingly similar to her voice. The actress said OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman had asked her to lend her voice to the project months earlier—a request she rejected—yet the company proceeded with a voice she considers an imitation. In the same interview, Johansson reflected on wider changes in Hollywood, noting that early in her career she was offered many parts revolving around “desirability” and the male gaze but now sees more varied opportunities for women. She is currently promoting “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” which opens in cinemas on 2 July.
