The U.S. House Ethics Committee has ordered Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to repay $2,983.28 after concluding she “impermissibly accepted gifts” connected to her appearance at the 2021 Met Gala, where she wore a white “Tax the Rich” gown. The sum covers $2,733.28 owed to the dress’s designer, Brother Vellies, and $250 to offset the cost of fiancé Riley Roberts’ attendance. In a 31-page report released Friday, the bipartisan panel said the New York Democrat attempted to follow House gift rules but fell short, noting no evidence of intentional wrongdoing. Ocasio-Cortez has already paid about $6,854 for transportation, lodging and other costs tied to the event, and her office said she will promptly settle the remaining amount, allowing the committee to close the investigation it opened in December 2022.
