Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc captured pole position for Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix with a lap of 1 minute 15.372 seconds, edging McLaren’s Oscar Piastri by 0.026 seconds and Lando Norris by 0.041 seconds. The pole is Leclerc’s first in almost a year and his 27th in Formula One. Mercedes driver George Russell qualified fourth, while Fernando Alonso underlined Aston Martin’s progress by taking fifth, only 0.109 seconds off the benchmark. Alonso’s teammate Lance Stroll will start alongside him in sixth. Former eight-time Hungaroring winner Lewis Hamilton could muster only 12th after failing to progress from Q2, and Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli also fell at that stage when his quickest lap was deleted for track-limits infringements. Earlier in the day, Piastri topped the final practice with a 1:14.916 lap, denying Norris a clean sweep of the weekend’s sessions. Alpine’s Franco Colapinto continued his steady improvement, qualifying 14th, one place ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. The 70-lap race at the tight Hungaroring circuit starts Sunday afternoon.
